First,
allow me to remind you that everything is metaphor. Everything which is
presented to you from other people, from religious leaders, from channels,
from spiritual groups, is metaphor. And what they experience when they
talk to God, when they channel from spirits, when they travel to other
dimensions is necessarily limited by their ability to interpret what is seen
and heard within this physical body and within the metaphors available to you.
For
what do we mean by this constant reference to metaphors? What it means
is that you have seen and experienced things in your life. And so, when
someone wants to convey some information to you, some new information, they do
it by relating it to things you understand. Thus the older image of God
as a father, an old man, sitting on a cloud. Or the Greek images of gods
as extensions of people. And now people are more comfortable with just
thinking of things in terms of energy and light, but is this not because you
are in an age in which energy and light are very common concepts? After
all, you are surrounded by the results of energy work by scientists: in
your television, in the light bulb, in the atom bomb.
And
so, in each era, people try to take the unexplainable and express it in some
way people will understand. And that is metaphor. If you are
comfortable with the concept of energy and light, then God is expressed as the
biggest possible source of energy and the brightest light, for that is a
concept that seems to work now.
But
the fact is, it is all metaphor. And also, what is seen and perceived by your
leaders and seekers and spiritual gurus is also tainted by the spiritual level
of the perceiver and by the limitations of what can be known on this physical
realm.
And
so, you have many well-meaning people who have a lot of concepts that they
bring back from other dimensions and realms and tell you about. And
there is some basis in truth, and they are certainly having the experiences
they tell you about, but you must decide for yourself the degree to which it
applies to you. You are the ultimate judge of what you believe is right,
for no one who is living truly knows what exists on the other side. That
is simply the case. There are glimpses and these glimpses are
interpreted and worried over. But you are the ultimate judge.
And
so, in the case of soul mates and twin flames, of course, everyone would wish
this. They would wish that there is another person out there that
completes them, that makes them whole, because you are struggling with this
physical existence and the lack of wholeness you feel. And here are
people telling you that they have found their soul mates and twin flames and
that you can too.
This
may be useful construct for them, but you must decide for yourself whether it
is for you. And I would ask you to consider that the world is full of
millions of people, and you will meet as many of them as you open yourself up
to. You can live in a narrow world or a wide one, you can invite many
people into your life or you can limit your exposure to a very small circle.
Your actions in this lifetime dictate all this.
And
so, in the metaphor which I have chosen to use, that of your existence on this
physical level with another level above in which you are unique soul selves,
and yet another level above that in which you are one with all, in this
metaphor I would say that there are soul mates only to the extent that you are
a soul mate with everyone that you meet in this lifetime, for each person you
have ever known, know now and will ever know is with you on the level above,
on the soul level, and you are deeply connected to all of them.
Now,
is it possible that there are some souls on this level above with whom you
have shared many lifetimes and had many close experiences? Yes,
certainly. And yes, you will feel a close affinity to these people when
you meet them. But what does that mean? Does it mean that you
should search for this person for whom you feel this close affinity?
Does that close affinity mean that you are meant to be linked romantically in
this lifetime?
It
means what it means. It is what it is. You feel a close affinity.
You have probably experienced things before in other lifetimes. That is
what it means. It does not guarantee a happy marriage; it does not mean
you should even necessarily be married. Those are decisions of this
lifetime.
And
is it possible that you will meet someone that makes you feel completed, as if
you have found your other half? Yes, this is possible. But again,
what does it mean? Does it mean that you should reject other
relationships which do not make you feel this way, looking and searching for
some construct which may not even exist for you?
It
all begins within you. Somewhere along the line you need to understand
that the only love which is truly lasting and which truly matters in your life
is the love which you bring into your life through connecting with your
spiritual self, your soul self. A love of self, because it is a
connection with self, and a love of life itself. Fill yourself with
this. Then realize that everyone you meet is a soul mate and has things
to offer you. Everyone. Open up your life to more people, to more
experiences. Do not use some test to eliminate people from your life.
Open up and bring more people in.
And
as for romantic love, know that it is not the goal of your lifetime. The
goal of your lifetime is to reach connection with yourself, to shine out with
the purity and wonder of who you are, exploring all facets of your own
personality and showing them to the world. And along the way, the
relationships with other people are of course vitally important, but romantic
relationships are only one part of this. Fill your life with many, many
people, many kinds of relationships. Do not think that you will be
fulfilled and completed by one other person in this world. That is only
true if that one other person is you.
You
are the only person who can make you complete for the rest of your life.
You are the only person who can truly fulfill you. Work on this.
Work on finding your own center and building up your own core through
meditation and quiet contemplation. Work on becoming the very best
and fullest expression of yourself that you can. Make this your goal.
And then, when you meet other people, accept them for who they are.
Encourage them to be full expressions of who they are, not expressions of who
you want them to be.
And
then, let it be. Let relationships develop; let life bring what it will.
You are on your own path and many others will cross it. Some will be on
the same path and will be able to travel with you for a while. Some are
on other paths, and your meeting with them must necessarily end lest one of
you be pulled off their own personal direction. Let this be.
Do
not take it personally. It simply is. Do not think that you have
done something wrong. No, you are who you are, exactly as you are in
this moment. Accept yourself. Accept others. And if it
happens that you meet someone on your path, feel a special affinity and find
that you are walking the same direction and can easily be together, each
fulfilling his or her own purpose while being able to walk together at the
same time, then take this as a great gift and enjoy it. But even here,
do not think that you will necessarily be together forever in this lifetime.
Things are as they are. You are not completed by another person, but by
yourself. And you are the only person you can definitely say will always
be here. So look for your completion within.
Open
up your life. Let people in, all kinds of people. Each one has
something to offer you. Do not be desperate about your life. Be
open and accepting. Let it be. When you shine with love and peace
and acceptance, when you are exploring and expressing your own unique self,
then you will attract to you many interesting people. Then just let it
be. Let things evolve. Do not push and prod and try to control
life. Let it flow.

Another winter holiday season is upon us, and the theme seems to be universal. You may call your holiday Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukkah, Ramadan, or Winter Solstice. It is a turning point, a time of celebrating light and the hope for new life. The common element is that we all consider it a time for honoring Spirit in our best and highest ways.
Here in the United States, the prevailing holiday is Christmas, and gift-giving is the major tradition. There are many stories behind the "why's" of this tradition. Many say it is to follow the example of the Magi who came to bestow their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh upon the Christ child. (See Matthew 2:9-11)
We want to have a joyous time, and remain mindful of our values. Yet, we often get caught up in the flurry of gift-giving fever, brought on by media pressures and society, and we forget to enjoy what others give us every day. In a time when people are saying "Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men," how is it that something meant to be so special can become so stressful?
Whenever we are feeling depleted from giving, it means we are not receiving enough. So much time and money goes into making our loved ones happy for the holidays that we wind up worrying how we're going to do it all. When you sacrifice your spirit, you are sacrificing too much.
Receiving is crucial for giving to be complete. In the famous story, The Gift of the Magi, by O. Henry, a man and wife find themselves lacking the funds to give each other what they wanted to for Christmas.
The two most valuable possessions they own are his watch and her hair. She sells her hair to buy him a fob for his watch, and he sells his watch to buy her some combs for her hair. By giving all they had left to give they each rendered the other's gift useless.
It's touching whenever anyone gives all they have to give. And one thing Christmas teaches us is that it truly is more blessed to give than to receive. So many of us want to be givers. However, if you are not able to fully receive when others are giving to you, you rob them of the blessing they receive as giver.
We need to allow ourselves to receive, as the Holy Mother of God received the Spirit. When we allow another's light to fill our darkness, their own darkness is also filled with light. When light is both given and received, the balance bridges a gap, creating a union, much like conception. What is created is a blessing.
This year, take time out for your spirit to receive. Spend some quiet time taking in the love you have been given, allowing its light to enrich you. Make it a silent night, a holy night.

It’s a long held belief of
mine that much of the unhappiness in the world is because so many people are
living their lives without a purpose.
In fact, I’m not even sure I would agree that someone is
really living if they don’t have a purpose. After
all, the ancient writer said, “without a vision the people perish.”
The Power of Purpose is why I love the story of John Goddard so much.
When he was fifteen-years-old, Goddard was inspired to create a list of
127 “life goals.” By one count, the “young seventy-something” has
accomplished 109 of these PLUS 300 others he set along the way!!
Here’s just a few of the ones he’s reached:
He climbed the Matterhorn during a blizzard that was so bad, not even the
professional climbers would go along. He has climbed Ararat, Kilimanjaro,
Fiji, Rainier and the Grand Tetons.
He retraced the route of Marco Polo through all of the Middle East, Asia and
China.
He rode in the Rose Parade, visited the Great Wall of China, the Okefenokee
Swamp in Georgia, and the everglades of Florida.
He was the first man to explore the whole length of the world's longest
river, the Nile. He also boated down the Amazon, Congo and others.
He has lived with 260 different tribal groups. John says these tribes range

He has flown 47 different types of aircraft, and set several civilian
air-speed records including one at 1,500 miles an hour. He flew an F-106 to
an altitude of 63,000 feet, making him the only civilian to pilot an
aircraft that high, a record which he still holds.
And I’m just getting started. But I think you get the point.
Okay, maybe it’s been awhile since you were fifteen, and maybe coming up
with 127 life goals is a bit intimidating at this point. But how about
10? How much would the quality of your life improve if you accomplished just
one life goal in each of the next ten years?
You won’t ever know if you don’t start now --- and you don’t WRITE
them down.
More than just one of the greatest adventurers the world has ever known,
Goddard is an incredibly wise person, as this quote of his demonstrates: "If
you really know what you want out of life, it's amazing how opportunities
will come to enable you to carry them out."
And that’s worth thinking about.
