Nourish Your Soul

Nourish- to feed or sustain with substances necessary for life or growth; to promote growth; to maintain or support; to nurture.
Soul- the immaterial essence, animating principle or actuating cause of an individual; the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings or the universe; a person's total self.
The holistic health field abounds with articles and books all teaching a variety of ways to nurture our souls. What exactly does all this mean and why is so important?
Our soul being the very essence of whom and what we are is our life force and therefore it needs food on a regular basis to sustain us and prevent us from becoming stagnant and unfulfilled with life.
So what is nourishing to the soul? The things that make you feel whole, alive, and one with the universe (or God) is your soul food. This will vary from individual to individual, as our souls are very unique and complex, although many of us have some commonalities. Some common sources of soul food are nature, music, dancing, deep relationships, meditation, walking, prayer and many more.
My most important source of soul food is nature. Doing things like spending time by the lake, taking walks and country rides, admiring the cloud formations, feeding and watching the birds, feeding a stray cat, gazing at the stars and moon. These are what are most nourishing me. Nature is my lifeline. It rejuvenates me and helps me to go on. It makes me feel alive, full of life and connected to the universe. There is nothing more nourishing to me than spending a day on a blanket by my favorite lake and being intimate with nature, especially on a warm fall day when the leaves are bursting with color. Spending it with someone I love and engaging in deep conversation is even better.
Writing, reading, certain types of music and singing along, dancing, deep relationships and prayer also nurture me.
You can discover your soul food by listening to the yearnings of your soul, by being still and tuning into your deepest voice within. Your soul will guide you to what it needs. Don't ignore it and don't put it off. Once you learn what you need, nourish it on a regular basis. If we neglect our soul then it becomes hungry and searches for food in the wrong places, which is destructive to our lives and zaps us of our life sustaining energy.
After years and years of neglect one becomes disconnected from their soul and gets lost.
Our world is sadly full of people who neglect their souls and the consequences of this are seen all around us in the level of addictions, violence, crime, depression, suicide, lack of compassion and respect for one another, divorce and destruction of our planet exhibited in our society. Our culture has not been very good at teaching us how to avoid this, perhaps because we were unaware for a long period of time, but slowly this is changing one by one.
Don't neglect your soul! Listen to it, nourish it, and feed it everyday. It is as important as feeding your hungry stomach. If you have neglected your soul, it is never too late to start again. The soul has an amazing ability to recover and flourish in splendor once again.

~Light & Darkness~
Love is the base of it all. Love is the basic building block of the
universe. If you can find your heart of
peace, the peaceful place in you which connects with the universe, with the all
of which you are a part, what you will find there is love, an endless source of
love, flowing, flowing.
And the people who appear to act evil
are simply not in touch with the love.
But they are still made of love, they still are loved, as well as you who
are more able to feel it and to understand it. There is room in the universe for
all, but each is on a different place on their path. Those who appear to do
evil, who perform unspeakable acts, are simply very far back in their path. They have much growing and learning yet to
do, and what does not occur in this lifetime will occur in those to come. And so, it also follows, that if you are
consciously aware of walking your path, then you are perhaps further along in
the evolutionary scheme, spiritually speaking, than are
they.
And for this, you must fill your heart
with gratitude, for having found enough conscious awareness of the beauty and
wonder and love which is life, in order to be walking your path and consciously
searching for ways to lift yourself to ever higher levels of awareness. You are lucky
indeed.
Others live in a darkness unknown to
you. Or perhaps it is known to you, in
that you were there at one time, and have now cleared away the darkness by
allowing in more of the light.
The light, the love, the peace and the
joy which flows from all of this, is always there. It is a choice that you make, that each
makes, to block it out, and to seek your happiness in other ways. I say a choice, although many are set on a
very difficult path from birth, and their choices are very difficult and their
path is arduous. But yet, along the way,
choices are offered, information is made clear, options are offered to each, and
the choices are made: to begin to clear
away the veil of darkness and see the light, or to continue in the dark,
thinking that the gleam from the gold can light your
life.
If you are reading these pages, then you
are walking your path. Yours too is
difficult. But be glad. Be very glad
that you have at least discovered that there is a spiritual path to be walked,
that you are consciously striving to open up your life and grow, that you are
opening your mind, your heart to all of the wonders of the world which are
yours. Be very glad, no matter how
difficult it may sometimes be.

for the Dalai Lama to let his guard down entirely and simply be
himself. His natural humor helps him see the folly that sits alongside
the serious matters in life.
Concerned about the
Big Issues
The Dalai Lama values life in all its natural forms. He is concerned
about the environment and the bigger issues that challenge the planet.
A born idealist, his courage strengthens others' confidence and
encourages trustworthy actions in others.
Communicating Beyond Words
While he is at peace with
solitude, he likes being with people who understand his deeper nature.
It can be quite hard to get to know the Dalai Lama and it takes
patience and perception to understand him. He communicates without
words, more with feelings, and it takes a highly perceptive person
to realize this. Only when he feels someone truly understands him
does he let them into his inner world.
An Intuitive Perception
The Dalai Lama is deeply
intuitive. He can perceive subtle shifts of attitude or feelings
in a room. When people come to him for guidance he can touch on
their emotional pulse and lend support.
He likes to sense rather than interact with reality.
His inner world is infinitely more interesting to him than the mundane
reality around him.
Divine Faith
"Trust" and "conviction" are important life
themes for the Dalai Lama. He has a natural faith that everything
in life has a purpose. This inspires him with courage and confidence.
Visionary
People look to the Dalai Lama as a visionary person. Sharing his
vision and putting forth ideas is an important part of his sense
of action. He is a natural diplomat and this earns him sincere respect.
Theory Plus Action
Despite his position as a world leader, the Dalai Lama has little
patience for those who ponder issues an ivory tower. He understands
the value of thoughtful action. He is determined, with strong willpower.
Having set his mind to something, he will pursue it to the end.
