As the soul becomes more pure
and bare and poor, and possesses less of created things, and
is emptied of all things that are not God, it receives God
more purely, and is more completely in Him; and it truly
becomes one with God, and it looks into God and God into it,
face to face as it were; two images transformed into one.
Some
simple folks think that they will see God as if He were
standing there and they here. It is not so. God and I, we are
one.
Meister
Eckhart
1260-1327
A German preacher and
theologian, Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) was one of the most influential
Christian figures of the Middle Ages, whose ideas and writings - though
officially condemned by the Catholic Church - were embraced by the great
Christian mystics.
Eckhart wrote about his own
experience of becoming one with God, and through his writings became one of the
world's greatest spiritual masters and exponents of the connection between the
individual soul and God.
